Stockholm School of Economics in Riga The “Informal Entrepreneurship Index” for Latvia
Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Strelniekuiela 4a, Riga May, 18 at 14.00-15.30, Room 311
The Stockholm School of Economics in Riga (SSE Riga) announces the launch of the first “Informal Entrepreneurship Index” for Latvia and cordially invites you to the presentation of the index. The presentation is organised as a part of the SSE Riga Open Workshop Series in Business and Management Studies* and will be run by the author of the index, SSE Riga faculty member Dr. Arnis Sauka.
The aim of the “Informal Entrepreneurship Index” is to measure the level of shadow entrepreneurship activity in Latvia and explore the main reasons and influential factors behind such activity. This is planned as an annual survey to provide entrepreneurship policymakers with data for making justified policy decisions as well as to foster a deeper understanding of entrepreneurship processes in Latvian society.
The SSE Riga “Informal Entrepreneurship Index” consists of the main determinants of shadow entrepreneurship activity, including underreporting net sales profits and number of employees, envelope wages, and business-to-business as well as business-to-government corruption. In addition, the overall tolerance of Latvian society towards tax avoidance, the entrepreneurs’ attitudes towards the tax system and administration, government support for entrepreneurship activity in Latvia and entrepreneurs’ suggestions on how to decrease the level of informal entrepreneurship activity in Latvia will be discussed. Furthermore, the survey focuses on the possible positive and negative consequences of informal entrepreneurship activity from the viewpoint of both company growth potential and possible contribution of firms on a societal level.
The survey draws on interviews with more than 590 entrepreneurs in Latvia and is conducted in cooperation with Lursoft (www.lursoft.lv) and the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (www.ecsb.org). The findings of the survey may be of particular interest to entrepreneurs, policymakers, researchers, journalists and students.
The presentation will take place on May 18, at the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, Strelnieku iela 4a, Room 311, 14.00-15.30. The working language will be English.
